The Continuing Nursing Professional Development (CNPD) Program, launched under Mission Niramayain Uttar Pradesh in October 2022, is a strategic initiative to strengthen nursing education, teaching standards, and clinical practice across the state. The initiative is led by the Uttar Pradesh State Nursing Council (UPSNC) operating under the Uttar Pradesh State Medical Faculty (UPSMF),with technical support from UP TSU, Jhpiego and Samagra. Quality assessments conducted by the Uttar Pradesh State Medical Faculty (UPSMF) indicated that 77 percent of nursing institutions were performing below desirable standards, reflecting gaps in pedagogy, clinical skills, research capacity, and professional development. In response, the CNPD was introduced to address these systemic challenges and support nursing faculty through structured, ongoing capacity-building activities.

The program focuses on enhancing teaching and learning methods, curriculum planning, simulation-based skill development, research and publication practices, communication skills, and clinical competence. An eight-member CNPD committee, including representatives from government, autonomous, and private institutes, oversees planning, approval processes, implementation, and quality assurance. Institutions seeking to organise CNPD sessions follow a standardised application and review process, including agenda submission, verification of resource persons, pre- and post-assessment tools, session documentation, and the awarding of certificates and credit points to participants and resource persons. A tiered remuneration structure supports expert engagement, while nominal registration fees ensure program sustainability.

Since August 2023, approximately 9,000 nursing faculty members have been trained across 20 CNPD sessions, demonstrating measurable improvements in knowledge and skills through pre- and post-test evaluations. Recognition through certification and credit points further motivates participation and continuous learning.

Suggestive measures include expanding simulation-based training, incorporating interactive and participatory teaching approaches, enhancing research mentorship, and fostering collaboration between institutions across the state. CNPD serves as a significant step toward elevating professional standards in nursing education and practice, contributing to improved patient care quality and a stronger healthcare system in Uttar Pradesh.
